Review of Lisa Lickel’s “The Map Quilt”

In honor of Lisa Lickel’s Kindle Book Launch yesterday, I’m featuring her book, The Map Quilt, today on Reflections. The launch is officially over, but the great price on Amazon remains in effect!
The Map Quilt, by Lisa Lickel
Old quilts, underground railroad…buried treasure!
Bookended by characters from 1860, The Map Quilt is a contemporary suspense that solves a 150 year old Wisconsin mystery. There’s the opinion that Judy Wingate’s ancient quilt is a map of the local area and was used by those running the Underground Railroad, but the yellowed slip of paper that’s found hiding in the batting is what really gets Judy wondering and investigating—not a wise thing to do when one is eight months pregnant. The questions begin to roll when the Wingate barn burns down, a body is found nearby, and a skeleton is uncovered in their yard. But what does a long dead woman have to do with the innovational battery stolen from their business? Does the mysterious newcomer have anything to do with it, or is it a competitor intent on putting them out of business before it even gets off the ground? The questions just keep coming, and keep you turning pages to the last.
The Map Quilt moves along at a nice pace, never giving the reader an opportunity to yawn. The mystery is cozy, yet complex enough to keep me scratching my head.
This is the second of Lisa Lickel’s novels that I’ve read. The first, Meander Scar, was an edgy contemporary romance that held me spellbound. The Map Quilt has a completely different feel, but is equally well written. It’s light, yet intriguing. It deals with America’s sinful past, yet inspires a frequent chuckle.
Many of the characters have names from history books—Hart, Ardyth, Tomasina, to name a few. It gives them an instant homey and endearing feel and ties in nicely with the 150 year old mystery they’re working to solve.
I haven’t read the first in the series, but I didn’t need to in order to fall in love with Hart and Judy Wingate. Grab it today while it’s price is reduced! Just $2.99 on Kindle. Can’t beat it!
