I’ve been working out more consistently over the last couple of months since my friend Bill graduated from college and moved back home for a year. It’s perfect, too; we work out in the basement of my dad’s office. The landlord put a whole slew of high-quality weight machines, dumbbells, barbells, and cardio equipment in there, plus there’s a fitness company occupying half of the space. The two big screen TVs hanging on the wall across from the cardio machines don’t hurt either.
Since we started working out, I have actually felt like I’ve been accomplishing something. I can’t quite yet say that I’m “in-shape” or anything that extreme, but I’m starting to feel better, starting to look better, and starting to look forward to working out.
If you know me, you know that I’ve always been a skinny guy, somewhere between emaciated and healthy. I didn’t have much on me by way of muscles, except for my legs, which are larger from several years of playing soccer.
I’m only 25, and my metabolism is still running on “take no prisoners” mode, so I don’t develop fat very fast at all. That said, I noticed a slight bit accumulating on my love handles and on my stomach over the last year or so, but it was nothing I couldn’t hide by sucking in my belly and flexing my abs. Well, that little bit has diminished noticeably on my stomach and my love handles seem to have recessed back to their original size when I was a stick.
Not only that, but in recent years my lack of consistent sport-playing had led to my once defined, strong legs becoming undefined, relatively strong legs. Well, no more! I’m starting to see familiar ripples in my quadriceps and more definition in my calves again. Plus, Bill is much bulkier than me from the waist up, so I have to at least be able to outperform him in some of the weight training, right? He owns the upper body stuff, while I own the leg workouts.
I need to keep working out, though. I can’t stop for any reason, or I know I’ll have a good shot at gaining some weight eventually. The crazy thing is that even though I don’t want to gain any fat-type weight, I do want to put on an extra 7-5 pounds of muscle, preferably on the upper half of my body.
In high school, as a senior, I think I weighed under 150 pounds (I’m sixe feet tall, by the way–like I said, I was a stick), but that was without working out, without doing much by way of sports. Somehow, through working out in college, working out after college, and being lazy when not working out, I’ve put on about 25 pounds since then. I’m up to about 175, or so my bathroom scale tells me. I’d like to get that up to 180 or 185 by adding some muscle to my top half.
Well, I’m working on it, anyway. Combine the regular workout times with some active cardiovascular sword-fighting events and church league softball on Monday nights and I might just be able to stay healthy after all.
Eventually, I see myself being in that 180-185 weight range with a solid upper half (the legs are easy; it’s just maintaining them at this point). I feel like having that kind of look will pay dividends for me as an author, actually. I’m going for a career as an action/adventure author, so looking the part (at least somewhat–I know I’m not going to inflate to Stallone or Schwarzenegger size) might actually help me sell more books. At least that’s what I figure.
I’m writing this post on my new iPad 2, by the way, hence the title. My dad bought a wireless Apple keyboard that he isn’t using, so I get to use it. :) It’s a nice setup if you can swing the cost for all of it.
Sorry to sidetrack you. Here are my questions for you guys: what do you do (if anything) to stay in shape? Does being in shape relate to your career? If you’re a writer, what role does staying in shape play in your writing? I’m curious to see the range of responses on this subject.
