Welcome to Reflections, Cathy!
Tell us about your epiphany moment when you decided you were going to seriously pursue writing and eventually publication.
From 2004-2008 I underwent a few life-changing events, and I realized that if I was ever going to fulfill the desire to write a book, that I needed to get busy. Looking back, I’m amazed at how God used that difficult and trying time in my life to put me on a road I probably never would have chosen otherwise.
Which of your books (published or upcoming) has been the most fun for you to write and which character is your favorite?
Hmm, if I’m honest, I can’t really say that writing either book was “fun,” even though there were enjoyable times with both stories. I’m really excited about the book I’m currently writing, The Way of Grace (Book 3 in the Miller’s Creek novels), because I believe it’s a message that needs to be heard. My favorite character in all the stories is Mama Beth, a woman who is full of wisdom because of her relationship with God and her study of the scriptures.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
I find all of it challenging. It’s honestly the most difficult, mind-numbing work I’ve ever done. Finding enough time in the day to get everything done is always a chore, and procrastination tempts me from every corner. Prayer and God’s grace push me forward past what often seem like insurmountable mountains. I’m so glad He goes ahead of me to clear the path.
Which character in your new release most interested you while you wrote?
I really fell in love with all three of the main characters as I wrote: Trish James, a recently-widowed mother struggling to trust God as she forges a path for her and her son; Andy Tyler, a young man whose heart aches for the widow and her son; and Little Bo James who faces the trauma and guilt of witnessing the accident that claimed his daddy’s life.
What would a perfect day for you look like?
First, beautiful weather outside would be a must—not too hot, not too cold—with at least partial sunshine, because I love to spend at least some time outdoors every day. I’d start with a cup of coffee and my Bible in a quiet and peaceful location. I’m introverted by nature, so I’d want to spend at least part of the day alone, but I also enjoy spending time with husband, kids, and grandson, so time with them would be great, too—probably playing games or engaged in some kind of outdoor activity. I’m also task-oriented and love the satisfaction of accomplishment, so meeting a goal, writing-related or otherwise, would be enjoyable to me. Then I’d like to close out the evening by a fire, with a cup of hot chocolate and a star-studded sky.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.
I was an early reader, and I’ve always enjoyed reading a big variety of books. Besides my Bible, I enjoy romance, mystery, suspense, Biblical fiction, and also thought-provoking non-fiction books on Christian living.
Are there certain foods or snacks keeps the words flowing for you?
Well, I don’t know if it keeps the words flowing, or just adds more pounds, but I love chocolate.
Are there spiritual themes you like to write about?
The spiritual themes of my novels tend to center around spiritual issues that I’ve faced. In Texas Roads, the theme was on finding true home (Jesus). In A Path Less Traveled, the issue addressed is trusting God, even when what you sense Him telling you doesn’t make sense in terms of human reasoning. And in The Way of Grace, the issues are hypocrisy and spiritual pride.
What lesson is the Lord teaching you right now or recently taught you?
He teaches me so much on a daily basis, but I would definitely have to say that lately the lessons have been on being authentic and real, and seeking to live for Him instead of myself.
When is your next book due out and can you tell us about it?
A Path Less Traveled was released earlier this month, and tells the story of a young woman torn between independence and trusting God. The book is available both online and in bookstores.
You can purchase A Path Less Traveled from Amazon.

I’m struck by how writing isn’t “fun” in general for her – it’s a ministry, obviously. A good reminder for ALL of us writers. I’d love to win this book. joanne(at)joannesher(dot)com

Joanne, I once heard Jerry B. Jenkins speak, and he said something to the effect of “No writer enjoys writing; they enjoy having written.” True words from my perspective.
Amen, Elaine! Those God-nudges can often only be seen in retrospect, but it gives credence to the verses on God directing our paths.

Cathy,
Recently God has been leading me to move to Texas, I have been trusting him along the way even though there are many people who try to detur where he is leading me. It’s hard to take the path less traveled… the one he leads you down. I’d love to read your novel and gain your perspective of following God’s path.
